EFI Founded
At a Newsmaker event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Former Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz introduces The Energy Futures Initiative. The announcement came two weeks after the announcement of the U.S. pulling out of the Paris Agreement by President Donald Trump. Moniz states that EFI is “dedicated to science-based, actionable solutions to the existential threat of climate change.”

EFI Releases First Report
EFI publishes its first report, The U.S. Nuclear Energy Enterprise: A Key National Security Enabler, raising the alarm about the evaporating U.S. advantage in nuclear technology and its possible negative impact on zero-carbon electricity and national security. At the same time, nuclear programs are contracting in domestic universities, and China, South Korea, and Russia are increasing their reach and influence as suppliers of nuclear energy, especially in the developing world.

EFI Restores the USEER Report
After the Trump administration quietly drops production of the U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER), EFI partners with the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and BW Research to provide continuity with previous editions of the USEER in data collection and accuracy in year-to-year comparisons. The report, handed back to the Department of Energy in 2021, continues to serve as an important and consistent tool for policymakers, trade associations, labor unions, and other stakeholders.

The Green Real Deal
In response to the Green New Deal declaration of principles, EFI releases the Green Real Deal framework with key principles and realistic strategies for achieving economywide decarbonization. This pragmatic approach continues to be a guiding principle for the organization’s work.

Establishing the Labor Energy Partnership
EFI partners with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) to form the Labor Energy Partnership (LEP), which conducts policy-relevant research and makes policy recommendations to build a clean energy future. The first report from the LEP, Building to Net-Zero: A U.S. Policy Blueprint for Gigaton-Scale CO2 Transport and Storage Infrastructure, was published in September 2021.

Celebrating Five Years of Impact
More than 300 supporters join EFI to celebrate its fifth year and EFI’s elevation to a preeminent thought leader in the energy space. At the time, EFI had published over 40 reports and senior staffers regularly briefed members of Congress and appeared at hearings.

Building for the Future
EFI rebrands to “EFI Foundation (EFIF),” a 501(c)(3), to build on the legacy work of the Energy Futures Initiative and carry on its mission. EFIF continues to bring together policymakers, scientists, communities, and financial experts to identify ways to fast-track the move to a low-carbon economy.

Launch of the Energy Futures Finance Forum
The Energy Futures Finance Forum (EF3) analyzes the barriers to large, private capital flows for decarbonization opportunities and to develop policy recommendations to help overcome these challenges. EF3’s framing report was launched at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Leading the Hydrogen Demand Initiative
EFIF is selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to lead The Hydrogen Demand Initiative (H2DI) to help accelerate commercial adoption of clean hydrogen in partnership with S&P Global, Intercontinental Exchange, RMI, and Dentons.

Our inaugural Impact Report showcases accomplishments throughout our history; our major activities in 2023; and the people, partners, and funders who make our work possible. By this time, EFIF research and analyses had informed more than 10 federal initiatives.

Launch of Nuclear Scaling Initiative
EFIF, Clean Air Task Force (CATF), and the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) announced the creation of the Nuclear Scaling Initiative (NSI), an ambitious effort to catalyze and build a new nuclear energy ecosystem to scale to 50 or more gigawatts of clean, safe, and secure nuclear power per year in the next decade—a tenfold increase of the current deployment rate.

Modernizing American Energy Innovation
EFIF releases the report, Modernizing American Energy Innovation: Five Ways to Re-energize the Department of Energy, which analyzes the challenges and opportunities the U.S. Department of Energy faces as it increases end-to-end support for energy innovation. The report was the first in a series dedicated to advancing solutions to accelerate U.S. energy innovation.

NSI Receives Grant from Bezos Earth Fund
The Nuclear Scaling Initiative (NSI) received a $3.5 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund to support NSI’s orderbook strategy, which aims to bring together multiple buyers to commit to building the same reactor design. The grant enabled NSI to pursue a coordinated, multiparty process among federal, state, and commercial partners to assemble a viable orderbook that can facilitate new large reactor builds in the United States.
