WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 7, 2024): The EFI Foundation (EFIF) is proud to announce the appointment of Karen Wayland to the EFIF Board of Independent Directors.

Dr. Wayland is Chief Executive Officer of the GridWise Alliance, a coalition of U.S. electricity industry stakeholders focused on building a more secure, reliable, and affordable electrical grid. Wayland’s career in clean energy spans leadership across government and the nonprofit sector. She is an expert in energy and environmental policy and previously served as a senior advisor to former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Wayland also served as a member of the Senior Executive Service at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). At DOE, Wayland established a team under then-Secretary Ernest Moniz’s office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis to develop strategies for states, local authorities, and Indigenous tribes to analyze emerging state and local policy issues.

Most recently, Wayland was the Executive Director of the Clean Energy Project, a Nevada-based nonprofit that produced the National Clean Energy Summit, which convened business executives, government leaders, investors, and thought leaders around U.S. clean energy development.

“Karen is a brilliant advocate for clean energy who combines deep expertise with proven accomplishments in coalition building,” said Ernest Moniz, CEO of EFIF. “Her policy knowledge and eye for innovation has already served EFIF well, as she has been a Distinguished Associate with us since 2020. We look forward to her guidance that we value at EFIF, and that is so essential to building a low-carbon future.”

The EFIF Board of Independent Directors provides guidance and oversight for the Washington-based nonprofit. Wayland joins Jeanette Pablo, CEO of the Climate Equity Alliance and former Director of Climate Equity at Clean Air Task Force; Richard Meserve, Senior of Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP and former Chairman of the International Nuclear Safety Group; Charles B. Curtis, Senior Advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and founding President of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI); and Clint Vince, Chair of Dentons’ U.S. Energy Practice and former Co-Chair of the Keystone Policy Center.
