I was privileged to have the opportunity to work closely with Ted Turner, serving together as co-chairs of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) after I was named CEO in 2017. Ted’s commitment to a safer and more peaceful world is part of NTI’s DNA, and his legacy will continue to grow alongside NTI’s ongoing impact on nuclear and bio risk reduction. Ted never missed an opportunity to advance his vision of a future for mankind free from the risks posed by weapons of mass destruction.
Getting to know the person Ted Turner has been, if anything, an even greater privilege. Ted was simply extraordinary—tremendous accomplishments in multiple domains, a fearlessness in tackling major challenges, a great sense of humor. I learned a lot from Ted in so many ways—even how to hunt quail (he generously appreciated enthusiasm over ability). Above all, I was honored to be Ted’s “pal” and to be his partner in building a safer world. That was his immutable and unflinching passion.
