WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 15, 2026): The EFI Foundation (EFIF) today announced that Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman distinguished service professor in economics at the University of Chicago, has joined its Global Advisory Committee.
Greenstone is a preeminent economist whose research has influenced policy in the United States and around the globe. He is a leading expert on the energy transition and how it can contribute to human health, energy equity, affordability, and reliability. Greenstone leads the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago, served as chief economist on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, and created the Air Quality Life Index, which converts air pollution concentrations into human life expectancy impact.
EFIF’s GAC brings together leaders from industry, government, academia, and civil society to provide strategic guidance on emerging energy and climate challenges and to help shape the organization’s independent, nonpartisan analysis. The committee, which meets annually, is chaired by Lord Browne of Madingley, co-chairman of the U.K. Prime Minister’s Council on Science and Technology and managing director at General Atlantic; and Franklin (Lynn) Orr Jr., emeritus professor in the Energy Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University. Greenstone joins Marisa Buchanan, senior vice president of strategic corporates and partnerships at bp, and Tom Fanning, former CEO of Southern Company, who were announced in June.
